Returning from a superb Deep Purple concert in March 1991 I decided that I would try to attend more live performances. From a recent and very positive review I remembered the words "guitar" and "blues" and the name "Walter Trout". So I went to see him the following week. I was hooked with his first guitar solo. So far, I have seen him seventeen times:
"The crashing, frantic solo guitar that opens every performance might sound part Jimi Hendrix, part Jimmy Page, part Stevie Ray Vaughan and part Eddie van Halen, but it's all Walter Trout. His steel-blue eyes cut through the crowd; his worn and peeling blond Fender Strat lays bare his emotions; wisps of hair stick to the sweat on his forehead. Round after round of machine-gunned notes are fired at a rate that makes the speed of light seem slow. Blues purists be damned: this guy attackes the electric guitar the way it was meant to be played." This quote is from "Walter Trout's Radical Blues" by Art Tipaldi in the October 2000 issue (no. 61) of Blues revue. The photos (© 2000 Mel Hill, www.melhill.com) are taken from www.waltertroutband.com, the home of Walter Trout and The Free Radicals. The second photo shows James Trapp (bass), Walter Trout, Bernard Pershey (drums) and Paul Kallestad (Hammond B3 organ). |
